Happy Easter

Posted by Dee under admin

The long weekend has given me a chance to really jump start a major de-clutter I have been planning, which isn’t really fun to blog about, especially not as a fell in the bath whilst trying to clean the tiles in our bathroom! However it did leave me a little chance to catch up on some knitting and bake some cakes!

Bouquet of Cookies

Posted by Dee under cooking

Last week I mentioned the Sweetopia blog and it’s amazing tutorials, so of course I had to try them out. I used the recipe from the blog, it worked perfectly – I don’t understand the science behind leaving the dough to rest in between preparing and rolling – but it seemed to work.

I used the shop brought royal icing sugar rather than the recipe online and it seemed to work well, the only issue I had was with piping the icing, I brought a kit from a local cooking supply store and the smallest tip was a No. 2, which seemed to work but wasn’t that accurate. But for a first attempt I was pleased and so was my mum!

Sweetopia

Whilst hunting on Flickr for inspiration for Easter cookies, I came across the Sweetopia blog, and spend the next few hours reading past entries, looking at photos, wanting to try the tutorials.

Sweetopia, includes the recipes for both the cookies and icing (I have real problems getting my icing just right), As well as tutorials on practical things like how to post cookies or remove air bubbles from your icing, these are some of the most in-depth tutorials I have seen on the Internet). As well as the array of decorated sugar cookies is an amazing selection of gingerbread houses – for all seasons not just Christmas.

Sweetopia is amazing at turning simple images into edible art (by using her KopyKake machine), from a polar bear on the ribbon to tissue paper or even the Mascots for the Winter Olympics. Obviously now I want a KopyKake, however I think I need to practice a lot more!

Bakerella

Posted by Dee under blog I like, cooking

One of the blogs I admire the most is Bakerella. She has the most terrific posts, full of beautiful photos, detailed instructions and links to buy the products (although they are all American). What I find most amazing is her ability to be completely topical. She tends to update on Sunday, and the post will be relevant to that week, whether it is for a major celebration (see her Easter or Halloween posts), or something else like Sesame Street’s 40th Birthday she is always completely up to date.

Another thing I love about her blog is they way she finds inspiration all over the place, turning simple things like burger and fries into cake form. My favourite of her posts has to be the Coca-Cola Polar Bears (I think it is because I adore the “Holiday’s are Coming” adverts). She used mini Coke bottles to become snow globes, and Cola flavoured cupcakes for the base.

In case you too have been inspired by Bakerella, but are wondering where to buy all the ingredients in the UK- fear not. CCCShop, has most the things you will need, mini cookie cutters, coloured chocolate melts, edible ink pens and even the sugars sprinkle shaped (used to make the mouths in the Sesame Street Cakepops).

Still need a little inspiration – how about making this Box of Chocolate Cake for Valentine’s Day.

Translating recipes

Posted by Dee under cooking

I often joke that google is my recipe book, if I ever need a guide on how to make anything instead of hunting through all my books, I head to my computer and start searching. If it is a basic recipe or a video on a technique, I always seem to find the answer on the Internet. However, there is one major problem! I have translate the recipes from American to British.

Confused, let me explain… the majority of the recipes I find are from American websites, they measurements are very confusing.  At school we were taught all about pounds and ounces, I pride myself mentally being able to translate these to grams. However, I was stumped when it came to “cups” and “sticks.”

At first I thought a cup was any random teacup I found in the cupboard, then I learnt that cups are an actual measurement! Around 250 grams in U.K. terms. I didn’t have any issues with teaspoons and tablespoons as I had a set of “measuring spoons.”

Measuring Cups from Amazon

When baking using butter has been my biggest obstacle, measurements are either spoon or sticks, have you every tried to use a teaspoon with chilled butter! After some research online (thank you google), I discovered this post. So now I know a stick is 113 grams and teaspoon is around the same as 20 grams.
